The room-category decision, not the hotel name, is usually what determines whether a stay delivers on its price. VIAIVE compares entry categories against upgrade categories with named examples from Capella Bangkok, Aman Tokyo, Bulgari Tokyo, and Four Seasons Kyoto.
Hotels · Room Category

Which room category to book.

The meaningful decision is rarely the hotel — it is the category, the view, the floor, and whether the room actually behaves the way the category name implies. This is the pillar page for that decision: definitions, upgrade logic, and the named examples VIAIVE checks against.

The rubric

Five questions that decide the category.

Each of these is a real failure mode VIAIVE has seen at named properties — not a generic hotel-shopping checklist.

Entry category risk

The lowest-named category at a flagship property carries the most variance — smaller footprint, weaker view, and sometimes a materially different renovation state than the category photographed for marketing. At Capella Bangkok and Aman Tokyo alike, the entry category is livable but rarely the version of the hotel worth the flight.

View category premium

A river, garden, or skyline view category is the first upgrade worth paying for at a destination-anchor hotel — Capella Bangkok’s river-facing suites reset the Chao Phraya standard specifically because the view category, not the base room, is the actual product.

Suite vs. villa

A suite buys space and a separate living area inside the main building; a villa buys a private structure, often with a plunge pool and its own arrival sequence. Aman and Bulgari properties in Tokyo make the suite case; villa-format resorts make the opposite case when the group needs privacy the main building cannot offer.

When not to upgrade

A higher category is wasted on a short stay, a trip built around dining and touring rather than the room, or a family that will not use a second living area. VIAIVE routes that budget to a better location or a longer stay instead of a bigger room.

Questions to ask reservations

Named category and exact square meters, the view direction in writing, floor range, connecting-room availability, renovation status, and whether a same-day upgrade is realistic versus one reservations will not confirm before arrival.
